I’m a sucker for fairy tale retellings. About a year ago, Mima contacted me about reviewing three books, which are all based on the fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin. She can give me ten lashes later for taking so long to blog about the books, but if you haven’t picked these books up yet, trust me and go do it now.

Say My Name by Tatiana Caldwell

Little does Ms. Caldwell know, but I’d read this book long before she’d given me a copy for review. Of the three stories, this one comes closest to following the original story, but Ms. Caldwell doesn’t disappoint by adding an erotic twist.

Anna meets Goblin, who spins straw into gold for her. But for every time he does this favor, he wants a sensual one in return. By the end though, Goblin wants more than her body–he wants her love. Spoiler alert (highlight with your mouse to read): The baby she has is Goblin’s; not the King’s!

In this novella, the story of Anna and Goblin is sweet, even as they are driven apart by the King. The secrets weaved into the story add another level of conflict, which keeps the reader turning the pages. An entertaining read.

Demon Lover by Bonnie Dee & Marie Treanor

This unusual story asks what might have happened if the Queen failed to guess Rumpelstiltskin’s name and he took the baby with him. Any mother worth her salt goes after her baby, of course.

Demon Lover is a full-length novel which takes the time to grow a relationship between Gwyneth and Ragnorak. It’s a very unique tale in that it starts at the end of the Rumpie story, but she isn’t able to guess his name! Ragnorak takes her baby to his world and Gwyneth follows.

Ragnorak is a very compelling hero who isn’t any good with women and is trying to do what’s best for his people. Watching him grow was a delight. Loved the dedication of Gwyneth to do what’s best for her baby. By the end of the story, you’re not sure who to root for: the King or Ragnorak. (Actually, it’s pretty easy, but yanno what I mean.)

Bitter Gold appearing in the anthology, Bound Among the Stars, by Jennifer Leeland & Mima

Mima is a favorite author of mine. Her world building skills are almost legendary. It’s no surprise that she takes Rumpelstiltskin’s story to a sci-fi level. I’ll admit that this story was slow to start for me, BUT I will say I think it was because of the sci-fi twist (which is a genre I don’t generally read). There is slavery and sexual addiction wrapped around aliens and a strange, beautiful world. And here, Liese, once she finishes the task will only meet death.

In this version of the class fairy tale, both Leise and Stillskin are doomed, and only have a chance of survival if they work together. Their dedication to each other, from the very first chapter, is so “aww”-worthy that you’ll find yourself rereading this tale. And jeebus, the sex… *fans self* There’s a lot of action and adventure, so if that’s more your speed, this will be the novella for you.

Y’all, I’ll confess that I’m a naughty hostess who totally meant to read the entire book before today. (Sorry Rachel) I’m on page 83 of 226 and will tell you this, as of right now, there are three stories in this book that made my toes curl and my hair sizzle. No lie!

Big-Bed Sex by Donna George Storey is the first story in this antho and wow! What a way to kick things off. When you read something this hot, you know it’s going to be good from there on out!

The Silver Belt by Lana Fox was full of whoa and awesome. I mean, dayum. This is the kind of push the envelope piece that totally got to me. (I’m so on the look out for more from this author.)

The Five Senses by Rachel Kramer Bussel. As someone who’d written her own piece about the five senses (my story totally flopped, btw), I couldn’t help but admire how someone could make those five simple senses so incredibly erotic. You try to make “smell” sexy–not likely to happen.

Want a peak of your own? Head on over to Amazon.com from the comfort of your own home (you can read a few pages of what’s inside!), or check it out at your local bookseller. I’m telling you, 83 pages in and I know it’s worth the price.

For every good review I receive, it seems the very next day I receive a not-so-good one for the very same book. I’m not at all confused by this because face it, reviews are subjective. What works for one person doesn’t work for another. I had one reviewer say a secondary character was a caricature and unrealistic, whereas another reviewer for the same book said she wished the same secondary character had been given more of a spot light. I’ve had reviewers applaud an action-packed story while other reviewers bemoan the fact that so much happened in such a short story. Reviewers read my erotica and call it “hot”; other reviewers read my erotic romance and call the sex “ok”.

You know what I’ve decided? You either love my stories or you hate them. Not much seems to go on in the land of in between.

C’est la vie.

the first review to land is almost as bad as waiting for a submission reply. Cold Blooded has been out for a couple of weeks and by now somebody has to have read it. (Right?) This release is a little different for me because I did something I normally don’t do and that is re-read it after it released.

Gasp!

Afterward I realized how light on sexoring it is. That’s gonna be a problem for somebody. lol. So, I sit here watching and waiting for the first review. Hoping people enjoy the action and forgive the hasty romance.

Reviews are subjective and for the most part, I enjoy the good ones and ignore the bad, but still, somehow that first one sets the tone for the ones to come. Here’s hoping reviewers show me some love.

(And please, totally ignore the fact that when I should be writing or editing or revising, I’m Googling my titles to see if any new reviews have popped up. Ignore it. Really.)
