I wrote a pirate yesterday to ask why he felt the need to offer my book for free to the public. I really was curious. His answer was asinine at best.
Tell me if you can spot the many, many, MANY flaws in his logic:
“What illegal books, they have been paid for, its kind of like a library you go get your book read it return it they buy it once like me or maybe they buy two copies, do you really expect some kind of resale fee or something on books I have purchased, thats not going to happen and why should it, ford doesn’t get a cut on a second hand car.. and the library doesn’t charge for it service, but it does pay its staff.
I don’t re-sell any novels at all, my purchases are made available to others for FREE download.
Most downloads come from countries that have purchase restrictions on them, people in East Asia and South America are forbidden to buy new novels from the USA Many novels aren’t even available in Europe… Publishers are the demons of the book world not the people that buy the books. or the people that would buy if given the opportunity.
I only receive payments for my time maintaining the Blog and to PURCHASE new novels, so that you can earn your royalties and eat.”
What. The. Fuck?
I’ll be sending him a bill for each and every download from his site…so that I can, as he puts it, earn my royalties and eat.

Ahem. There is NO logic there whatsoever. Fucktard. And the publishers don’t keep Asian countries from being able to buy books. Their effing governments of small minded buttfucks do. Geez.
Did you ask him what he thought the big warning at the opening of the
book in regard to fines and the FBI was all about? Such an asshole. You
should post his site addy so we can all go over and give him a piece of
our mind.
I sent him a follow-up email (btw, I’m sure this emailing thing is not a smart idea, but I’m so furious! This particular book has been pirated left and right. 196 downloads within the first week of its release alone…and I’m only *now* finding out about this site). Anyway, in my follow-up, I asked him what he thought the copyright section meant. I’ll see if he responds.
If anyone wants his email addy, just write me and I’ll be happy to provide. I haven’t quite yet sunk to the point of ‘authors behaving badly’ to post it here.
I am totally with Tess. Post his name, his email address, if you can get it, his ip and we will all gladly bill him, and serve is ISP/host with TOS violations/cease and desist. There are things we can do. We all just need to put on our big girl panties and do them. Billing these asshats is the first step.
He just doesn’t get it, does he? I just can’t believe the way people think!
Lex,
You can’t argue with the ‘fucktards’ of the world. You are 100% in the right and he is a ‘fucktard’. With probably a very small penis.
I’m sorry you had to deal with this. Since technically he’s a pirate, maybe we should form a mutiny and make him walk the plank!
Oh my… I will never understand people. It’s no wonder so many authors quit writing, what with all the revenue lost to these people.
So he’s a what? A freaking library?
Don’t think so.
What he doesn’t get is he’s a thief and he is stealing from you.
Janice~
HAHAHA…ok this guy clearly hasn’t ever heard of copyright before. ummm…this guy is a mega asshole who will never understand how long it takes to write, edit, publish a book. I’m no writer but I am a reader. I’ve seen authors miss a night sleeps or two cuz they wanted to finish something they’ve worked so hard for to please they’re fans. Guys like these will get what’s comming to them. And Dee, make sure it’s a big fat bill lol great blog!
A comforting (or not) piece of silliness I remind myself about when stunned by an asinine piece of garbage like this (Oh, not you, in case I’m being even less coherent than usual, I refer to this fine upstanding gentleman (there may be a little sarcasm being used here) making access possible of his own personal library of books for those unable to download … that would be people without internet access and computers, I believe .. which would mean that they can’t read the books and therefore there is no piracy … I knew somewhere his logic had to make sense!):
“A moron has an IQ of 90. The average IQ is 100. There isn’t a lot of difference.”
Ahem.
p.s. I’m here by way of Lex, who has a delicate way of directing one’s attention to certain things!
Absolutely unreal. Obviously common sense has left the building and the big-ass FBI warning didn’t register. My personal favourite is him likening himself to a library.
Total idiot. I say bill him.
What astounds me is that Google (which owns Blogspot) has not disabled this site.
Unfortunately, this English blogger is probably not the only person who does not understand that he bought a license to read an ebook on his device. He did not buy the rights to make copies and publish.
The very sad thing is that nothing we say will make any difference to him at all. You can’t argue with people who think this way. It might make you feel better to have a rant at him but in the end it won’t change the way he thinks. Its VERY upsetting. I’ve had my books pirated the first day and I just can’t see why people think this is okay. Trouble is we are just small fry – even the pubs are small fry compared to the music and film giants and look at the struggles they are having. Maybe all we can do is have our moment ranting and maybe a few people might think again before they illegally download but I’m not holding my breath. Doesn’t mean to say I’ve given in to these guys but I’m trying not to let it get to me any more.
And people wonder why DRm is being added to ebooks.
The man is a blithering idiot. Of course any excuse these pirates give makes little sense to intelligent people. He isn’t in the US so the copyright info at the beginning of the book means absolutely nothing to him. He feels entitled to do whatever he pleases. Giving away ebooks, indeed. I wonder how he would feel if we went to his house and started giving away his possessions?
I see he’s moved, but still “in business,” it appears, and not exactly hiding. On checking his old blog (at *DELETED by Dee), I found a publicly posted CONTACT EMAIL ADDY where he can, apparently, be reached… and (here’s the kicker) 2 novels he is encouraging people to download and read while waiting for his response……. How incredibly, incorrigibly, despicably sad.
*Dee says: I’ve deleted this link as I don’t want to encourage others to visit the site to download illegal copies. Thanks for your understanding.
Ahh…just noticed the link I posted in my previous comment won’t work because of the parenthesis. Sorry about that. Here it is again: *DELETED by Dee.
*Dee says: I’ve deleted this link as I don’t want to encourage others to visit the site to download illegal copies. Thanks for your understanding.
Oh, he “gets” it, all right. Pirates think they are fine if they buy the copy before uploading it. The FBI thinks otherwise. Did you give him a ‘cease and desist” warning? Plus a copy of international copyright law? File a police report on the slime bag if you have a name. Maybe he won’t give a large rodent’s derriere, but maybe he will pay attention to the FBI warning, the Interpol warning, and the publisher’s notice (if your publisher does that for you).
Refer him to the local police in the city where he lives. Of course, most of these slime bags use a pseudonym, and they block your IP once you track them down. The sharing sites they use are well aware of the laws, and they will take them down within a few days, if not immediately. Just find the link that says “report abuse”. Tell the site that you issued him a personal warning but he laughed at you, and that you expect them to remove his upload privileges before they end up with a infringement lawsuit from the DOZENS of authors whose books he has uploaded.
Astalatalk doesn’t house the downloads anymore. and neither does Demonoid! They simply direct you to where the sleaze balls have housed the uploads.
If there are any of you who want to get your publishers involved in a joint piracy eradication effort, let me know.
Dee…report this sleaze ball to Google and Yahoo. They will dismantle his site if he is sharing copyrighted material. Send THEM a cease and desist. Give them his blog addy. Then check back in a day or two to see what happens.
Thanks, Dee, and my apologies for the slip! I wasn’t thinking in terms of encouraging anyone, of course – just offering the link as back-up info to my comment. (Frankly, I was steamed by what I’d found, and appalled by his chutzpah.) But you’re absolutely right – one never knows who might be reading these forums, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Thanks, again.
I love my fellow writer-peeps (and my readers, too!). This person hosts a well-known site and as a result of my email, and the actions of numerous others, he is simply moving his “library” to a new location…so the fight begins again. As many of you have suggested, I have sent DMCA notices; I have referred him to copyright laws.
As much as I hate DRM, it’s guys like this who lead me to lean toward its use. And that’s a shame for people who purchase their books legitimately.
Wow, the nerve. No wonder you are fuming!
Obviously the brain dead still live amongst us.
Karma and the law will always get their way….eventually. I just hope that his antics are curbed sooner than later.
I hate hearing about rip-off artist like this guy….its always puts a bad taste in my mouth.
Good luck Dee. I hope you manage to shut this guy down.
