Hot Damn!

June 30th, 2008 by deecarney

When inspiration hits, it hits ! The interracial/May-December romance I was telling you about? Finished writing it…10K in under 48 hours. I had such a great time writing it; totally could see Damian and Shawna’s romance taking off. Anyway, I sent it off to three beta readers. One of them (who has read almost everything I’ve ever even attempted) said "I think this is your best one yet. It was a page turner…"

*Snoopy Dance*

I’m going to query a publisher about it today. Wish me luck! Until you hear more about it from me, here’s a lovely pic of Gerard Butler to drool over. Enjoy!

So I lied…

June 25th, 2008 by deecarney

Normally, in between writing projects I like to take about a week off. Give my poor little brain a chance to rest and recuperate. This time I felt so guilty! I’d so recently posted about all of the great projects that were underway and would hopefully be completed in June. But, Den of Iniquity took so much out of me this month and it was a slow, painful process to get it completed.

Today, I opened up my files trying to decide which one I’d actually work on finishing as I have promised myself. I read what I’ve written so far. I smiled in the right places. Fixed a few things. But none of the stories sang to me. Not like the one I had plotted one day while at work a few weeks ago where my characters screamed at me for ignoring them.

So, despite many promises and posts about what I would be writing on…despite progress meters with lots of blank space…despite a book full of ideas on where to take my current WIPs, I’ve started a whole new story. This one (I’m keeping the title to myself for now) will be an interracial, May-December erotica/romance. I’m shooting for 10,000 words. If it tells you anything about how driven I am to write it, I’ve worked on it for half a day and I’m somewhere around 3,500 words down. I’m guessing I’ll have the first draft finished tomorrow, barring real life getting in the way. And although I originally planned to submit it to my usual publisher, a friend recommended another where it would fit in perfectly.

So, here’s what I do know as true. In my July newsletter, I’ll post an excerpt from Den of Iniquity. In August, you’ll get a sample from this current project. Two chapters in and it’s hot, hot, hot!

Finished!

June 24th, 2008 by deecarney

There is such a sense of accomplishment when you’ve finished writing a story. After much anguish and gnashing of teeth, DEN OF INIQUITY: THE MONEY SHOT is done! Woot! I’ll post an excerpt of it in my July newsletter. (You still haven’t signed up yet? Man, you are missing out!) This story is more about the relationship between a dom (shifter) male and the sub female he meets moreso than the bank robbery. Who knows what the editing process will bring though? I’m just glad it’s finished! It may become book 1 of the series, instead of book 2 as originally planned. That part is still up for debate. Let me get through editing it and then submitting it before worrying about that part.

And speaking of finished, both THE FALLEN and CAREER OPPORTUNITIES have gone through final edits. They look very much improved from the original versions and I can’t wait to see the covers that will eventually go with them.

Even though I don’t get to enjoy a literal new book smell with my stories, I love the new book excitement that comes with each one!

A round of applause…

June 21st, 2008 by deecarney

Please give the Cobblestone Press authors a hearty thanks for stopping by my blog over the last two weeks. I’ve learned so much about my fellow authors and what motivates them. All of the posts were both informative and interesting. Show them some love by stopping by their web sites for more information about them and their books.

Speaking of books, I’ve discovered a new site. Have you all been over to Goodreads yet? It’s a site where you keep track of books you’ve read. Of course, you can rate the book as well as write a review of it. (See my scathing review of Life of Pi if you dare.) On top of that, it’s as much a social networking site as anything else. I’ve signed myself up as an author and have given the world yet another opportunity to learn about me. :D If you decide to stop by, "friend" me. I’ll hook you up - especially if you tell me you learned about it here. A number of Cobblestone authors have been genius enough to sign up too.

One thing I can say about CP, it’s one big happy family. (Does that sound too cultish? lol) Well, no matter. It is.

Reading & Writing

"If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time or the tools to write." Stephen King, On Writing
This is one of my favourite quotes, and it’s so darn true.
I buy anywhere between 4-6 books every month. I have a list, which I put together months before the books are released. I’m a very loyal reader. If I read a book and enjoy the story, more than likely I’ll pick up everything the author releases after that. Or, I go back and buy from their backlist.
Series are also something that I’m crazy about. You wouldn’t believe how many series I read. But I can’t get enough. My bookshelves are as overcrowded as my TBR pile. Still, the bookworm in me refuses to stop buying books.
Picking up a book off the bookshelf and getting totally engrossed in it is one of my favourite things to do. But you know, asides from reading the story, enjoying the world and falling under the spell of the characters, it also helps as a writer. It’s helped me realize what genre I write in, and with understanding the mechanics of a book.
I’ll never stop reading, and even now, when so much of my own writing consumes my day, I still make sure to put time aside to read. As Stephen King stated, if you don’t read, how could you possibly write?
So tell me, what’s your reading habit like?

It’s a Heartache - Dreams of being Published

Anyone who’s ever read my blogs knows I always title them with a song or lyrics to a song, because I like to see how many people can guess the song or artist. So, if you want to play along, tell me who sings the song in the title.

Now…onto the blog .

As any author will tell you, writing is hard. So if you’re planning to pursue the dream of becoming published, make sure you wear plenty of body armor.

Like most writers out there, I started writing when I was a child. It was my way to fill a void.

I was in my late thirties when I decided to actually plant rump to chair and start writing with the intention of getting it published.

My first attempt at a story did not receive the warm, glowing review from an editor I told myself it would and in all fairness, looking at the unfinished manuscript now, I was highly delusional to think so.

However, that not so glowing response to my first book gave me the determination to do it right. So for the next four or so years I did as much studying and training as I could find on the Internet. Living on a military income with four children to take care of didn’t allow me to spend real money on my training, so I read books and found a free online writing course which really helped me understand the craft….as opposed to reading published authors and trying to emulate them.

So, in 2003 I sat down and wrote my first book. I thought it was awesome! And really…the premise was…but when I sent it to another writer (who was fairly new at fiction writing) he tore it to shreds and all but said, I’d never be a real writer. So, instead of letting him dissuade me, I decided to prove him wrong and went back to my "how to" books and studied some more. It wasn’t until an editor I had submitted a query to, asked to read the whole book that I though, Yeah…I can do this . Of course, that was short lived when the editor rejected the manuscript saying it "wasn’t ready". However she gave me wonderful insight into what I was doing wrong. So, with her feedback, I went back to the manuscript and spent the next three months *fixing* it. When I was satisfied I’d done what needed to be done, I sent it to a reader, who was the wife of a writer friend. She loved it! That was my sign. I sent the book back out and three months later found an agent.

Of course, now you’re probably thinking…so where’s the heartache ? Well, four months after I signed with this agent (who happened to be at one of the more prestigious firms in NY) I got a call saying she was leaving the house and could no longer represent me. Thus began my first "shot to the heart ".

It took me a year to find a new agent (2005) and when I did she was very enthusiastic about the work and started submitting right away. About four months later, we got interest from an editor. That summer I met up with the editor at the RWA conference. We talked about what she planned to do for the book, she asked if I’d be able to do the revisions she wanted and she was genuinely excited about taking the book to committee. Then, in November that same year, she asked me if I’d write a novella for an anthology she planned to put together. She only gave me a 15K word count, because I’m an unpublished, unknown writer and she told me it had to be contemporary–I’ve only written suspense—and erotic—I can do a hot love scene…but there’s a difference between my hot and the erotic she wanted.

Needless to say, I was totally out of my comfort zone….but I wrote up three chapters and a proposal and sent them to her. Since it was the holidays and the publishing business pretty much shuts down in November and December, I didn’t know what she thought of the story. Then …..

Heartache .

Before the editor could go to committee with my novel or submit the novella, she left the house. We still submitted the novella because the anthology was supposed to still be a "go", but the editors sat on it for three months with no reply and my agent pulled it. And, instead of resubmitting my novels (she had my two romantic suspense books), my agent decided to wait for my current work in progress. However, life and things happened in the past year that kept me from working on the story and I was unable to send her a completed manuscript by the end of July, so she cut me from her client list.

Heartache.

Now, you’re probably wondering why anyone would want to subject themselves to such pain. Well, for me the reason is, because if I don’t….how will I know? (If he really loves me…oh, sorry….can’t stop the songs in my head).

However, because of my own stubborn determination and persistence, I AM now published. My book, Her Will His Way (the novella I mentioned earlier) released April 18th at Cobblestone Press. I’m so very proud of this book and am so happy to be able to share it with you all.

Things that help put me in the mood to write

As a writer, I’m always desperate for new things to put me in the proper mood. Here are some tips and tricks I use to evoke the atmosphere I need to put pen to paper (or more appropriately, fingers to keyboard):

1–Scents are often one of the most overlooked senses, and yet the human mind has scads and scads of memories associated with scent. Think of an emotional memory that ties in with a particular scent (perhaps one that makes you laugh, cry, or long for someone), and use that scent when writing to evoke those particular feelings in yourself. You’d be amazed how much easier it is to transfer those emotions to the page. For example, if you’re trying to evoke a feeling of home, maybe pop some chocolate-chip cookies in the oven (then bonus, you have cookies to reward yourself, too! hah)

2–candles (scented or unscented). I love the flickering of candles off the objects around me. When I’m trying to write something dark or romantic, I find candles help pull that mood out of me.

3–music. If there’s a mood you’re trying to create, there’s a song that can help. Some people love music without lyrics, while others love the lyrics. Play around with it and see what works for you.

4–sexy clothing. If I’m trying to write a love scene, I find I feel more confident and aware of my own sexuality if I dress in a more provocative manner.

5–watch a movie that has a similar feel to what you’re trying to evoke before writing. Visual stimulation is a fantastic aid when going to write a scene. It helps make things more tangible in your mind.

6–act out a scene before writing it, whether just in your mind or with someone else. This can apply to sex scenes, as well as any other. Go through the dialogue in your mind and let yourself feel the emotions so you can accurately transfer them to the page.

7–a little alcohol can help. I love sipping on a glass of wine while writing. Too much will make your writing sloppy, but just a little bit can help relax you enough to let you tap into your sensory emotions.

If anyone has any good tips or tricks, please share them!

Self, meet your naughty side

I’m convinced that most women have a naughty side. Some of us just don’t let her out in public. I think on occasional you should let your naughty side out to play, let her take over, pick your outfit, or inspire your do something… well, naughty.

Some of my favorite naughty links:

askmen.com – great info and articles
fredericks.com – because everyone needs a little something sexy to wear
liberator.com – naughty furniture for the new naughty you
digitalplayground.com – I did say naughty, didn’t I?
Slumberparties.com – get together with a few friends and find out what’s new on the market

A few steps to help you on your way to embracing your naughty side

Step One
The first step to embracing your naughtier self is to admit you have one. Assure yourself that it’s okay to want sex… with a stranger. And I say if it’s okay for a guy to gawk a girl on the side walk, vice versa handsome. Sex is natural so get used to it.

Step Two
Commit yourself to spicing up your life. Obviously, if you’re reading erotic romance, you’re spicing up your life. Way to go! Let your imagination run wild. Don’t be afraid to stretch your wings and push your boundaries. Things that may make you a little uncomfortable now may just bring you incredible pleasure if you get the gumption to try.

Step Three
Find like minded people… like the folks who read this blog. Isn’t it nice to know that there are others out there who just love hunky men as much as you do?

Step Four
Don’t make excuses, remember, you’re embracing your naughty side.

Step Five
Practice being naughty. Try on that skimpy little “outfit.” Write your SOS a racy lovenote. Give them a call and tell them all about your plans for later that night. Flirt shamelessly.

Vampire Oracle - Harmony

I never thought I’d be writing a paranormal romance. I write straight contemporary. I also didn’t write fully disclosed love scenes. So, when the call came out for proposals for the Vampire Oracle line, why did I jump at it?

I have no idea. I originally read through the descriptions for each card and thought they sounded great. For someone else. Not my thing.

But then the Harmony card showed up (they were released for proposals five at a time, just like they are being published the same way).

I was drawn to the face on the card:

Then, the description captured me:

Key Words:
sustenance, without conflict

Meaning:
This is a time of happiness and constancy. But like all good things, they have been worked for and could slip through the fingers if taken for granted.

My storyline for Harmony immediately popped in my head and I rushed to open a document and start laying it out. Once I finished that, I carefully checked all the rules for the proposal and then submitted it.

It all happened very quickly, but I was in the middle of the pack for submissions and we were to wait until mid-August, or maybe it was the end, but either way, it was a long wait. However, we got lucky and Deanna and Sable made their decisions much faster. When I saw the email pop up in my inbox earlier than the expected date, I assumed it was a decline and was afraid to look.

It was a contract!! (Obviously, since I’m writing this, but still, very exciting for me.)

From then to now has been a busy time: writing, editing, blurbing and getting ready for release date. The first five Vampire Oracle novella’s released yesterday (June 6/08). Vampire Oracle: Harmony will release August 1/08. And, if I do say so myself, those love scenes turned out pretty hot. I hope you will enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed stepping outside of my comfort zone and writing it.

Here is my blurb:

Quote:
Recently engaged, Kara Staten and Marc Brodeur are in love, and life is good. Kara has a brand new business, and they have both worked hard to get to where they are. When things start to turn bad, they struggle for the harmony they once had.

The balance starts to unravel, secrets become harder to keep. Kara’s skincare salon’s "Take A Bite Out of Love (TBOL)" campaign results in several almost fatal love bites, and Marc doesn’t know if he’s the cause. He’s a vampire trying to live a normal life.

As the vampire in him struggles to take control, Marc is only sure that he can’t be the man Kara needs. She doesn’t know he’s a vampire–can’t know. As their lives spin into separate paths, they will find that the thing that could tear them apart is the one thing that will ultimately keep them together.
